Our story

Our story starts back in 2012 in Big white, Canada, where we met training to be ski instructors - following Canada came a season in Argentina, a year in London and finally we moved down to the south coast, where we started to create a life for ourselves. We worked in, and ran a pretty busy beach cafe/restaurant for the past 8 years…some of you may know of it…

By the end of 2020 we felt ready to start house hunting, we had moved in with the parents in order to save up and had started our search, after finding a house and going through the whole lengthy process, the seller decided last minute not to sell. We were devastated, the market was only going one way and we felt like we had no options left. Fast forward to a dog walk where Brett turned to me and said “what about Spain?”

We’re impulsive people, love the idea of an adventure and have actually had this conversation 100+ times before, but this time it stuck..why not Spain? If not now, when? By the end of March we had handed in our resignation for the end of the year, very tentatively asked the parents if we could extend our stay and started saving up like crazy ready for the big adventure!

We spent three months at the beginning of this year renting a cottage in a small village in Asturias while searching for the right property, we had a pretty limited budget so something that was ready to move into was out of the question,  we were looking for a doer-upper.. and we found one! A property that had a roof, walls, some buildable land in front and not much else.. perfect!

Offer in and accepted and away we go, we’ve set up a caravan on our land out front and day by day we are starting (very slowly) to turn the building site into a home for us, and a guest rental/catered lodge next door for all of you! Realistically we have no idea what we’re doing… we do have fluent Spanish from Brett as he was bought up in Spain which is a huge help, beyond that we’re relying on our relentless optimism….!

The idea of this blog is to try and use it to journal the entire process, every obstacle and scenario we find ourselves in, plenty of meltdowns have happened already and we’re sure there’s only more to come, but with each disaster always comes a lesson and if there is no lesson? Well then I use my motto “it’s all good for the plot”

Happy reading!
